Nose Sinus Pain

Nose sinus pain aka Sinusitis is an infection that is caused by the air cavities within the passages of the nose. This infection can be classified as acute sinus infection, chronic sinus infection, infected sinusitis, and noninfectious sinusitis.

What causes sinus infections or sinusitis?

Sinusitis can be induced by anything that impedes airflow into the sinuses and leads to the drainage of mucus. The sinus openings may be blocked by enlargement of the tissue lining and adjacent nasal passage tissue, which often happens in the cases of –

  • common colds
  • allergies
  • OTC nasal spray (tissue irritants)

Treating sinus infections

Over-the-counter medications –

  • Using a nasal decongestant spray, like oxymetazoline, can help relieve sinus infection symptoms for the short term.
  • Longer use can cause a repercussion effect in nasal congestion. Limited use of nasal spray is preferred to treat a sinus infection; chronic use can worsen symptoms.
  • Sometimes a steroid nasal spray like – fluticasone, triamcinolone or mometasone can help with nasal congestion symptoms.
  • Other OTC medicines that contain antihistamines and decongestants can help with sinus infections.
  • Surgical Treatment advised if medical management fail, procedure such as FESS or Sinus opening widening is done wish are day care surgeries

Sinusitis signs and symptoms include -

  • sinus headache
  • facial tenderness
  • pain in the sinuses
  • fever
  • cloudy discoloured nasal or postnasal drainage
  • the feeling of nasal stuffiness
  • sore throat
  • cough
  • occasionally facial swelling

Symptoms of bacterial sinus infection involve –

  • facial pain
  • pus-like nasal discharge
  • symptoms that last more than a week and do not respond to over-the-counter (OTC) nasal medications.
