Cancer can be described as the sudden, unmanageable growth of cells that attack and cause harm to the surrounding tissue. Oral cancer shows up as a sore or growth in the mouth that doesn’t heal on its own. Oral cancer, which includes tumours of the lips, cheeks, tongue, floor of the mouth, hard and soft palate, sinuses, and pharynx (throat), can be hazardous if not found and treated early.

Oral cancer is among the top three types of cancers in India. In India, oral cancer which accounts for about 30% of all types of cancer. Over 5 people in India die every hour everyday because of oral cancer.

Some main known causes of oral cancer:

  • Cigarette or cigar smoking
  • Family history of cancer
  • Excessive consumption of alcohol
  • Use of tobacco
  • Human papillomavirus

Although, it has been seen that over 25% of patients with oral cancer are non-smokers and drink only occasionally.

Treatment for Oral Cancer

Oral cancer is treated the same way as other possible cancers. Surgery is performed to remove the cancerous cells, which may be  followed by chemotherapy or radiation therapy.

Some commonly known symptoms of oral cancer include:

  • Swellings/thickenings, rough spots, lumps on the lips, gums, or different areas inside the mouth
  • The formation of red or white patches in the mouth
  • Bleeding in the mouth
  • Numbness or tenderness in the mouth area
  • Ulcer on Tongue and Mouth, mouth or face that bleed and do not heal within two weeks
  • Soreness or feeling a lump in the neck
  • Trouble biting or gulping, talking or moving the jaw or tongue
  • Sore throat, or change in voice
  • Ear pain
  • Sudden weight loss.

Following are some step to prevent oral cancer:

  • Do not smoke or consume tobacco or alcohol excessively.
  • Limit sun exposure and use sun protection creams.
  • Eat a healthy diet.
