Types of nosebleeds

The site of the bleed represents nosebleeds. There are two main types of nasal bleeding; however, one can cause more serious issues than the other.

  • An anterior nosebleed – This starts in the front of the nose on the lower part of the wall that detaches the two sides of the nose (called the septum).
  • A posterior nosebleed – This takes place deep inside the nose; it can cause bleeding in larger blood vessels in the back part of the nose near the pharynx.

Causes of nosebleeds include:

  • Nose picking
  • Colds  and sinusitis
  • Blowing your nose with force
  • Inserting an object into your nose
  • Injury to the nose or face
  • Allergic and non-allergic rhinitis
  • Chemical irritants ( strong odours)
  • High altitudes (lack of oxygen)
  • High Blood pressure
  • Blood thinning drugs being used

Treatment

There is a list of treating options physicians have to offer; these comprise of:

  • Nasal packing – concocting ribbon gauze or peculiar nasal sponges as far back into your nose as possible.
